Do you have the skill set to become a lawyer?
You need to equip yourself with skills that can help you be successful in the legal profession. If you have little idea of what these skills are, here are some examples you should be aware of:
1. An analytical mind.
This includes logical reasoning, creative thinking, decision making, etc. Having an analytical mind is a broad way of saying that you have to be quick on your wits in organizing your thoughts because you are required to think deeply and thoroughly during a limited amount of time.
2. People skills.
As a lawyer, your clients will be people themselves and it is important to improve your people skills. What this entails is that you have to be emotionally intelligent and be completely professional when it comes to handling your clients. People used to say that you have to detach yourself emotionally from the client in order to give an unbiased judgment in your decision-making but there is no proof that this is correct.
Considering the different types of clients that you will meet, there is no avoiding that you will sometimes feel an emotional connection to them. Sometimes you will treat them as your best friend and give more effort in defending their case. Sometimes you will have a client you truly believe is in the right. And sometimes, you will encounter clients who oppose your beliefs. A difficult client will be more prone to receive less favorable behavior from you if you don’t detach your emotions whereas; an easier client will receive more favorable behavior.
You will also be interacting with fellow attorneys, judges and legal professionals and as such, it would be best to convey professionalism and give them the courtesy they deserve.
3. Last on the list is time management.
A lawyer’s life is busy. Being a lawyer demands a lot of hard work and so, managing your time is a needed skill. To lawyers, time is a precious resource that should not be wasted. Lawyers work at an estimated 80 hours a week and that gives them little to no time for leisure. Managing your time will help you avoid exhausting yourself because law is a demanding profession and avoiding exhaustion is essential in the long run.
Are you financially stable when it comes to paying off your school tuition?
If you are financially stable and can stay in law school until graduation, you no longer have to read this. If not, you have to come up with other options that can help you achieve your goals. There are a lot of ways to find financial support such as, looking for sponsors, or applying for a scholarship. There are many ways you can achieve financial stability. All you have to do is to keep looking for these opportunities.
Are you mentally aware of the struggles that you will face?
No one ever said that becoming a lawyer is an easy thing to do and as such, you should be prepared to face the multiple struggles that you will have to encounter. So if you feel like it’s too hard, think back and remember why you started in the first place.
After having sacrificed so many things, are you still willing to take this path?
After struggling through the challenges of practicing law, there will come a time that you will feel exhausted and hit a breaking point where you feel like giving up. What will you do? Are you still willing to walk down this path? Being willing to do something means that you intend to give out results. In the case of becoming a lawyer, “wanting” is not enough. Take the appropriate steps in order for you to achieve your dreams because even though this is not an easy path, it is a path to a future that you can direct yourself towards. As I said from the start, becoming a lawyer is a noble pursuit.
